Rally 2015: S/V Manatee report on crossing the Columbia River Bar

One of our first boat reports for the 2015 Coho Ho Ho Cruising Rally!

S/V Manatee crossed the Columbia River Bar using the engine and auto pilot on the evening of July 29, 2015.

The bar was unrestricted with 4 foot wind waves on a 2 foot swell from the North.  Wind was NW 15 kn gusting to 25.  We encountered dense fog from buoy 2 to buoy 10 (4 nm), then clear sky with sunshine.  The approach was timed to hit the bar at slack current (about 7 PM) and then ride the flood in.  It took about 2.5 hours to cross the bar because the combined effects of the waves and wind slowed the boat to 1 kn after we turned to head toward buoy 2.  We moored at the Astoria West Basin just after dark.

We kept to the red buoy side of the main channel and had one cargo ship call us on the VHF radio to make passing arrangements.  The ship passed us at mid channel but we couldn't see him visually—we just tracked him with radar and AIS.  We also detoured around a CG helicopter lifting someone in a basket out of the water at about buoy 20 (it looked like a training exercise).

The crew wore full foul weather gear because of the cool air temperatures, regular spray from the bow, and the one odd wave that broke over the starboard gunwale and sloshed down into the cockpit.  It was choppy so we also clipped into the jack lines.

The Port of Astoria West Basin Marina (West of the bridge) is the best place to tie-up.  It is close to both downtown Astoria and a good marine supply store.  The Port of Astoria East Basin Marina is not used much because they have Oregon Sea Lions—sometimes as many as 1,500!

My thanks to the Manatee crew: Ralph Cumberland and Joy Johnson.

Coho Ho Ho Rally 2014: Brads last official weather brief. September 1, 2014 monday

Brad Baker Coho ho ho weather September 1, 2014

This will be my last official weather brief for the Coho ho ho.  I know that there are two more boats yet to depart and a few of you out there at various locations.   Things get busy for us at Swiftsure Yachts this time of year with preparations for two boat shows and an influx of new lisitings, so I will not be continuing with daily weather briefs.  Don't be afraid to give me a shout via email or phone 206-920-7174 if you would like a quick look at conditions specific to you.  I make no promises, but I'll do what I can.    Further I apologize for this late forecast today.  I've been internet challenged this morning.

We have the textbook pattern with high pressure offshore and an inland thermal low for Northern California.   Winds off the Southern Oregon and Northern California coast will be definite small craft advisory levels and the National Weather service is calling for gales more than 60 miles off the coast.  This pattern will continue at least through the next four days, however thermal low is forecast to extend a bit off shore and the waters from SF south should moderate at bit during this week, perhaps lightening a bit further north come Friday.

Four day forecast for Southern Oregon and Northern California

Today September 1, 2014, Labor Day!

Wind N to NW 15-30 knots with higher gusts possible.  Combined seas to 9' with a short wave period.

Tuesday September 2

Wind N to NW 15-30 with gusts to 35.  Strongest winds between the capes.  Less wind 10 miles or closer to shore.  Combined seas to 12' with short wave period

Wednesday September 3

Possible gale force winds between the capes.   N to NW winds 15-35 with gust to 40.  The strongest winds between the capes.  Less wind closer to shore.  Winds nearer SF should be more moderate to 20 knots.  Seas will be confused with breaking waves in the worst areas.  Wave height will vary, but is forecast to reach up to 13' of combined seas.

Thursday September 4

N to NW winds 15-25, with possible higher gusts.  The National Weather Service is calling for the wind to ease a bit in the afternoon and evening as the thermal low starts to move offshore.  I'm perhaps a bit skeptical, but what you probably can depend on is the conditions will be more mellow 10 miles or closer to shore.  Seas, confused, to 11' in the worst areas.

Friday September 5

Well, what can I say, the forecast according to the weather service is for the wind to moderate quite a bit except N. of Cape Blanco.  So wind speeds 5-20 South of Cape Blanco and 10-25 N. of Cape Blanco.  Seas, combined seas to 7 or 8 feet, but definitely trending less throughout the day.

Coho Ho Ho Rally 2014: Brads weather brief, August 31 sunday

Brad Baker Coho ho ho weather August 31, 2014

Yesterday's forecast seems to be on track.  The GFS weather model has been consistent with the pattern.  The pacific high is marching east and is forecast to then drift to the North over the next 4 or 5 days.   The Thermal low generated by the hotter temperatures inland of N. CA will continue to interact with the high pressure creating an area of wind off the N. CA coast that will have moderate to strong N to NW winds and the short wave period choppy/confused seas that come along with those winds.  The latest GFS model shows the thermal low pushing a bit to the NW as the pacific high drifts north.  This is why the wind field will extend further north extending into Oregon waters.  Another side effect should be that the waters closer to land from about Mendocino South should go to a pattern where there will be less wind closer to shore.  This pattern should be well in place by later Tuesday into Wednesday.

4 day Forecast (all are From Coos Bay to SF)

Today August 31, 2014

From Coos Bay to Cape Mendocino, Light to Moderate N to NW winds 5-20 k with the lighter winds further South in this area.  The winds should increase as the day goes on.  From Mendocino to SF winds will are forecast at NW 15-25 with gust to 30.  There will likely be a bit less wind 10 miles or closer to shore for the entire forecast area.  Seas, combined seas to 10', obviously less where there is less wind.

Labor Day

N to NW wind 15-25 with gusts to 30.  The wind will likely be a bit less north of Cape Blanco.  The South of Blanco there should be relief 10 miles or closer to shore.  As the wind increases the seas will become steep and confused with a short wave period.

Tuesday September 2

N to NW winds 10-30 with gusts to 35.  Strongest winds will likely be from Cape Blanco to Point Reyes.   With the thermal low pushing more to the west the waters closer to shore should offer relief from wind.  This should be most pronounced 10 miles or closer to shore.   Combined seas to 12' with very short wave period

Wednesday September 3

N to NW winds 15 -30 with gusts as high as 35 in the windiest locations.  Strongest winds between the capes.  Less wind 10 miles or closer to shore.   Combined seas 12 with shore wave period.  The biggest seas will likely be near Cape Mendocino.

Thursday September 4

Maybe mellowing a bit, let's go with N to NW wind 10-25 kts with gusts to 30.  The stronger are forecast to extend to about mid Oregon Coast.  From Cape Blanco south there should be less wind 10 miles or closer to shore.  Combined seas to 10'.

Bragg on the way.  A good celebratory dinner was had for our first successful ocean passage!  Cheers to all and thanks for keeping us company down the coast!
